CAFE: The best garden centre cafe for miles around. Great value and service providing excellent meals in a very pleasant environment.

Cafe Rating:
DOG FRIENDLY? Stanford Garden Centre is not dog friendly. It does not allow dogs in any area of the garden centre or restaurant. See the picture below taken during our visit in 2024 which makes their position on dogs very clear.
Dogs not allowed in Stamford Garden Centre
We would question the legality of the sign shown in the picture above. It makes no mention that assistance dogs will be allowed. See this link here for details on what is and what is not allowed as far as assistance dogs are concerned. Whatever the legalities, it is extremely unfair and uninformed not to allow assistance dogs in an establishment such as a garden centre.

Gates Garden Centre
Welland Vale Garden Centre
SIZE: Medium sized, we estimate 30 to 40 tables.
FOOD TYPE: Typical garden centre cafe food with breakfasts, coffee / tea and cakes as well as main meals.
FOOD QUALITY: Judging by the food we sampled and the comments we overheard from other customers, the quality of the food is very good. We rarely rate any garden centre with five stars for food quality but the cafe at Stamford Garden Centre fully deserved this rating.
Menu at Stamford Garden Centre cafe
We chose the Simpsons butchers (in the garden centre) sausage sandwich which was served with red onion chutney, coleslaw and good quality crisps. This cost a very reasonable £8.95 and for an extra £1.95 the crisps could be upgraded to chips making a very substantial meal.

The sausage filling in the sandwich was plentiful and tasted delicious. We checked with the on site butchers (Simpsons Butchers) and they confirmed that they were the suppliers of the sausages to the cafe and were their own Lincolnshire sausages. The sandwiches were served warm making this one of the best meals we have had at a garden centre for a long time.
DECOR: The decor is very pleasant with solid tables and decent chairs. The whole cafe area is kept very clean.
OUTDOOR SEATING: There is a covered outdoor seating area at the Stamford Garden Centre cafe which looked to be a pleasant area to eat in if the weather had been more warm.
SERVICE: The cafe is table service only and we were shown to our table almost immediately upon entering the cafe. Our order was taken five minutes later and the excellent Americano coffee was served a couple of minutes later. The sausage sandwich was served ten minutes later. Excellent service by very pleasant and attentive staff.
VALUE FOR MONEY: Excellent value for money given the quality of the food, the decor and the service.
SIZE OF PLANTS AREA: This is a medium sized plants area.
PLANT SELECTION: There is a fair choice of plants but not an extensive one. The plants looked to be in good condition.
Outside plants area
LAYOUT: The layout is pleasant without being outstanding. The main paths are hard paved with other paths being compacted gravel. There are plenty of signs to plant groups. The car park has plenty of space for cars and it is directly outside the main entrance.
VALUE FOR MONEY: Prices are slightly higher than average.
SIZE: Medium, bordering on large
LAYOUT: The layout of the interior sales area at Stamford Garden Centre was somewhat confusing. Not at all like your average garden centre. It has no co-ordinated structure to it.
They do stock a reasonable range of gardening accessories but at the same time, a good proportion of the area is given over to gifts and home ware.

VALUE FOR MONEY: Average
ACCESS: The inside sales area provided good disabled access all round. The outside area had solid main paths with smaller paths being gravel. The gravel was compacted sufficiently to pose no major problems for wheel chair access.
FACILITIES: We found it unusual for a medium sized garden centre to be used for a display area for wood burning and multi-fuel stoves. The company they feature is Clearview Stoves. The show area also stocks expensive looking sofas and chairs.
